Unspeakable
A Collection of 8 Shorts

“The shroud of secrecy that pervaded the pieces was haunting, powerful... There was well-placed humor that made the more unsettling parts of the stories hit home even harder. The pieces... gave the audience the tangible unsettling feeling that something horrible lay beneath the surface. I found myself mesmerized.”
Scott Harrison, Director, Actor & Founder of Ironweed Productions

“One of the best productions I’ve seen in years... The plays reveal the consequences of hiding family shame... Fast-paced dialogue and thoughtful characterization made the plays highly entertaining.”
Elaine Coleman, Playwright & Author

"Deborah wishes to break the taboos and exorcise the shame of the victims... She also employs humor, satire, and compassion to lighten the dramatic load... Deborah is attempting to demythologize the canard that the rape victim is somehow 'different.'" Jeff Laing, SantaFe.com, click here to download pdf.

"An evening of theater that explores the many faces of trauma: denial, miscommunication, lying and more. Unspeakable presents the dark side of life without being preachy, and the eight short plays tell stories from a variety of perspectives." The Santa Fe Reporter, click here to download pdf.

“Every act portrayed the spirit of denial... Unspeakable was very moving, very funny, and extremely well written.” Peggy Van Hulsteyn, Playwright, Author, Public Speaker

"If you're afraid of the big bad world out there, home is your safe haven. Unless home becomes the big bad world--as in the performance piece Unspeakable... The playwright focuses on a turning point--acknowledgement, denial, maybe even accusation--in the character's lives... Who can people turn to if it seems like everyone around them is either indifferent to, ignorant of, or directly responsible for their suffering?" Robert Nott, The Santa Fe New Mexican, click here to download pdf.

The statements above are quotations from articles and patron letters that are available in their entirety upon request. The plays were workshopped at Santa Fe Film Center Stage in 2008 as a fundraiser for the Santa Fe Rape Crisis and Trauma Treatment Center. Individual plays have also been part of festivals.
